Breastfeeding Counselling & Postpartum Doula Support

Not quite sure what to do now that your baby has arrived? Facing breastfeeding or babycare challenges? Learning how to read your baby's cues but not able to settle him? Nursing and caring for your baby might seem easy before your baby's birth; it all feels new and foreign at home with your new child! Or perhaps you want to talk about your birth experience. A counsellor or postpartum doula can help you settle in and offer reassurance, information or simply company for the ride! All sorts of advice is doled out to new parents; she can help you decide what works for your baby and your family.

Breastfeeding may be physiological but it still takes learning and patience. The early days of nursing a newborn can be tough, because you are learning about your technique and how to manage breastfeeding. You may have been told that you will not be able to breastfeed successfully because of your breasts, your perceived inability to make enough milk, or a very hungry baby. This is not usually the case, most challenges can be resolved.

How We Can Help

Once you understand how breastfeeding works, achieve a good position and latch with your baby, and feel confident and supported, you will be able to breastfeed successfully.

A breastfeeding counsellor or postpartum doula can help if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • sore or bleeding nipples
  • engorgement or uncomfortably full breasts
  • a low milk supply
  • a "fussy" baby
  • a baby who never seems to stop feeding or sleeps at the breast without sucking vigorously
  • a sleepy baby who does not wake to nurse
  • a baby who has become used to bottle-feeding and refuses the breast
  • a baby who chokes and sputters at the beginning of a nursing
  • if supplements have been suggested and you'd like to supplement while still encouraging breastfeeding
  • nursing an older baby or breastfeeding through a subsequent pregnancy

Nursing your baby is more than delivering nutrition; it is a style of mothering. Working through challenges during the early weeks will pay huge dividends for you and your baby. Our breastfeeding counsellor can come to your home to watch you hold and feed your baby, problem-solve and suggest ideas to help. If you have had a past negative breastfeeding experience and would like to work out what went wrong so that you can have more success this time around, a session may also help you.

A postpartum doula can provide hands-on instruction for practical babycare concerns, discussing your lochia or your birth experience.
