Placenta Encapsulation

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the birthing person’s placenta after the birth of their child by dehydrating, grinding and placing it into capsules for them to ingest as they see fit. The ingestion of the placenta is known as “placentophagy.”

The purpose of placentophagy by the birth parent is to reintroduce the beneficial vitamins, minerals, hormones, proteins, and other nutrients to their body following labor and birth of their child. This is thought to help restore a more balanced body function, prevent “baby blues” and the more serious postpartum depression, increase milk production, shorten healing time, increase energy levels, and provide an over-all feeling of wellness to aid in the transition between pregnancy and the early postpartum period.

PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION PROCEDURE

BEFORE THE BIRTH

Please verify that you are not a hepatitis B carrier or have any other blood borne diseases. If you test positive at 36 weeks of your pregnancy, you are advised NOT to consume your placenta if you are breastfeeding.

AFTER THE BIRTH

COLLECTION

Upon the birth of your child, make sure that you store the placenta in a cooler bag with ice packs while waiting for the placenta to be delivered. Please deliver your placenta to us within the first 48 hours after the birth.

PROCESSING

We will wash and clean the placenta and remove the amniotic sac and umbilical cord from the placenta. We will then steam the placenta to remove all bacteria. The placenta is then sliced into small pieces to be dehydrated at low heat for several hours. The dehydrated placenta is then blended into coarse powder and encapsulated.

DELIVERY

Within 7 days, we will contact you once the placenta capsules are ready.

NUMBER OF PLACENTA CAPSULES

As the placenta varies in size, each placenta will yield between 100-200 capsules.

RECOMMENDED DOSAGE

It is recommended that the capsules are taken daily during the postpartum period (dosage instructions are included). Whenever a mother feels that she needs the extra support, she can always increase her dosage.

STORAGE

As we do not add any preservatives to the placenta encapsulation process, it is recommended that you refrigerate the placenta capsules for up to 6 months. If you choose to store them beyond 6 months, it is recommended that you freeze them in an airtight container.

Cost of encapsulation service: $500 per placenta

Placenta essence is available at additional cost at $300. It is an additional supplement for the postpartum mother. You may use this at times of transition, stress, sickness or lower immunity health. A few drops of essence can be added to food or drinks.
